Week 1: How to Install iOS 8

This article is part of a weekly series on the top eight features of iOS 8. We're calling it "8 weeks of iOS 8"

The next generation of software for the iPhone and iPad is out, and it’s called iOS 8. Apple touts that this free download will bring desktop-class computing power to your mobile devices, but are they right? As you may have guessed, we at Appinstructor are a bit biased; we tend to agree with Apple. While iOS 8 will look nearly identical to its predecessor, there are some serious under-the-hood changes that will improve the way you use your iOS device.

For the next eight weeks, Rick and Scotty will be bringing extremely practical tips for this year’s massive update. We hope you’re excited to step into a more streamlined and cohesive experience with your already beloved iPhone and iPad.

How to install iOS 8

This week’s tip is a pretty good place to start: How to install iOS 8. To be honest, there’s good news and bad news.

The good news is that installing iOS 8 is as easy as opening your Settings, going to General → Software Update, and following the on-screen instructions.

The bad news is that iOS 8 requires a ton of free space on your device for the installation process. We wager that about 80% of people will not have the necessary 5GB free on their devices. Thankfully, there’s still a solution.

Use your computer

If you receive a message that there is not enough free space on your phone to install iOS 8, follow these steps.

  1. Plug your device into your computer and open iTunes.

  2. Both devices will ask if you "trust" the other in a prompt. Press "trust" on both to continue.

  3. Click on the icon of your iPhone or iPad.

  4. On the screen which shows your device’s summary of settings, click the button which says “Check for Update.”

  5. Follow the on screen instructions.

Your computer will now download the update and then install it to your device. The whole process will take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on your internet speed.

Once the installation is complete, your device will not look very different like it did going from iOS 6 to iOS 7, but instead of a new paint job, you've just received a new, powerful engine for your device.

In the coming weeks, we’ll share some of the most powerful new features that await you. And remember, our goal isn’t to simply celebrate the progress of technology. (How boring!) No, we want to share features that will help you communicate more clearly with loved ones, keep the chaos of life organized, capture valuable moments, and have fun.
